Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has revealed what his first job was when he joined the Formula One team in 2013. It is probably not the first thing that would come to anyone's mind: his first official act for the team was making sure the toilet was clean.
Wolff pays attention to the smallest details, according to his revelation published in Harvard Business Review. When he first visited the Mercedes factory in Brackley, he noticed clutter on the table in the lobby. At his first interview, he commented that the reception area did not say 'Formula 1' and that that was the first thing that needed to change.
He also applied that approach when he first visited the toilet in the team's hospitality area during races. "It was dirty, and I thought: that cannot be. This is our home on a race weekend and where our sponsors come with their families," Wolff said.
To remedy the situation, Wolff hired a full-time hygiene manager, who now travels with the team. The team boss demonstrated in minute detail exactly how to clean the toilet, even making sure the soap bottles were facing the right way.
This somewhat obsessive approach permeated every aspect of the organisation. "Everything is spotless and organized. I think that affects how we look after the cars too. We’re meticulous," Wolff said.
To what extent this approach actually contributed to Mercedes' success is difficult to establish, but Helmut Marko has an amusing response when F1-Insider.com asking him if Red Bull Racing has the same mentality: "Sometimes it is enough to have a Max Verstappen who makes a difference," he says with a wink.
We know Lewis has a toilet phobia so its understandable Toto would focus on this.
Back in the mid 1980's, our company hires a management consultant to help the company get itself better organised. He blew a fuse when he went to the toilet and found there was no toilet paper. His point was "How can you expect to be a leading IT company, if you can't even make sure that there is toilet paper?" Which i thought was a fair point. Ron Denis was famously a bit of an obsessive and he also did pretty ok as a team principal for many years.
It's a real shame toto already peaked so early in his career.
True, the only thing we haven't heard Lewis complain about is the toilet.
Verstappen complaints why Perez is in front daily
Even for a troll this comment is ridiculous. Sergio isn't in front of Max because he isn't fast enough. Even in an equal car he isn't as fast. I have no idea what planet you're from but I insist the come back to pick you up
If you are getting annoyed, that's my cup of tea
You could help by returning to whichever bridge you live under and go back to scaring goats
You need to watch races with an open mind not to feel like Verstappen is beyond criticism. Every time Perez starts ahead of Verstappen, he immediately complaints on the radio that we losing time just because Perez is in front. If you can't make use of that, I don't know how I can help you further understand
Seems like he started out as a humble person. Then over time he became as they would say about "money talks and......"
This guy will find any way he can get press. Non important post.
He didn't clean any toilets. He only showed a professional cleaning manager how to do it, apparently not trusting him to know how to keep a toilet clean. I can only imagine the interview with this hygiene manager about his first "job" at mercedes, talking to Cleaning and Maintenance Magazine.
He was asked by journalists who are looking for news to feed your appetite about new information. Can't believe you just found something new to dislike Wolf and Mercedes. The guy can't breathe hey
Getting Brawn fired to put (buy) himself as team principal, was that also part of the "Toilet cleaning" process? I'm asking for a friend..
He must have kept and hoarded all the sh1t that he used to clean in his earlier days at Mercedes, and that is why he is full of it today!
