Rain and the Spa-Francorchamps circuit are inextricably linked. So often rain made a race at the historic circuit in the Ardennes an interesting event. A race in the rain can be beautiful and spectacular, but a lot of water on this track also brings extra danger. Recently, this, unfortunately, became clear again, with the tragic accident of young driver Dilano van 't Hoff.
Spa-Francorchamps is considered by many F1 drivers as one of the favourite circuits on the calendar. At the same time, everyone is aware of the history of this track. Van 't Hoff recently crashed at this circuit, and Anthoine Hubert did not survive a 2019 Formula 2 crash there. Yuki Tsunoda reflects on the passing of both talents ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix.
"It's impossible to go to Spa without thinking of the terrible fatal accident that happened a few weeks ago, and it’s only been four years since the previous fatality in a race there. My thoughts are with their families and friends.," said the Japanese AlphaTauri driver.
At the same time, Tsunoda is looking forward to the last Grand Prix before the summer break. "Like everyone, I really like Spa, and with the car we have right now, the main challenge will be finding a set-up that gives us the best possible straight-line speed and as much downforce as possible for the high-speed corners. We also have to factor in that it’s a Sprint weekend, but I’m looking forward to that because I really enjoy qualifying at every track, and to do two qualifying sessions in one weekend at a brilliant track like Spa, is quite special. Each track has a different type of excitement during qualifying, and at Spa, it’s definitely a high-speed rollercoaster buzz," the Japanese tells.
