Ferrari ruled the waves during the first day of the
German Grand Prix weekend. If things they stay as they are in the cooler temperatures, then they could well be competing for their first victory of the 2019
Formula 1 season. But the key thing is those temperatures.
Yesterday, the air temperature reached around 36c, while the track temperature was flirting with 60c. In Austria, the
Mercedes cars struggled to handle the heat, and while they're fitted with plenty of upgrades to tackle the problem, that might be why
Ferrari was ahead.
Max Verstappen, who had some small issues during FP2, looks strong and in his usual position to pick up the pieces should Ferrari and Mercedes drop something. However, the
Red Bull mechanics were set a tricky overnight task as
Pierre Gasly ploughed into the wall in the closing stages of the second practice session.
The midfield battle is as tight as ever. At the end of yesterday's session, we had seven different chassis in the top 10. Mercedes, Ferrari and
McLaren were only two teams to have both of their drivers in.
Today's weather
It has rained heavily overnight. The Hockenheim track should be green today which might end up favouring
Valtteri Bottas. However, there's around a 50% chance of rain during qualifying which might add a little bit of spice. Follow the first practice session below.
