Lewis Hamilton hopes the FIA will take strict action against exceeding the budget cap. The Briton prefers not to say much about it at the press conference in the United States, but he is putting pressure on the FIA.

Formula 1 is currently under the spell of the budget cap. After the Singapore Grand Prix, the FIA announced that Red Bull Racing would have exceeded the budget cap, but a penalty did not yet follow. This is because Red Bull disagrees with the FIA's calculation and argues that it stayed within the budget cap.

Hamilton steps up the pressure

Hamilton does not want to interfere too much in these matters. ''There's nothing I can say that would be beneficial, it'll be on the assumption of what may or may not happen. So, I'm not giving it any energy,'' the seven-time world champion stated at the press conference. The Mercedes driver would like to focus more on developing the car, while he hopes Mohammed Ben Sulayem (FIA president) will do the 'right thing'.

Hamilton's fans are clamouring for his eighth world title. For those fans, the fact that Red Bull has exceeded the budget cap is further confirmation that Max Verstappen and his team do not deserve the 2021 world title. Hamilton clearly has an opinion on that point, but won't be put off.

''I have my own opinions of what we did as a team and how we did it last year. And I'm really proud of that. And, belief in what we earned. It doesn't really change a huge amount. I do think that sport needs to do something about this in the future otherwise, if it's quite relaxed… if they relax with these rules, then all the teams would just go over, spending millions more and then only having a slap on the wrist, is obviously not going be great for the sport,'' Hamilton concludes.
