Marko does not see Perez winning over Verstappen: 'No one is capable of that'

Helmut Marko argues that Mick Schumacher was never an option to bring to Red Bull Racing as a reserve driver. Daniel Ricciardo was preferred, as between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, Marko also still expresses confidence in the Dutchman.
After the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing officially announced that Ricciardo will become the new reserve driver for the Austrian team. The Australian thus returns to his old team, with which he won seven Grands Prix. Now, however, in the role of reserve and third driver.
Ricciardo's first and only choice
Mercedes also had its eye on Ricciardo but is now in all likelihood turning to Mick Schumacher. Asked if the German was also an option for Red Bull, Marko is very clear: ''No. He has always been part of the Ferrari programme and is therefore not interesting for us. Especially since our reserve driver competes a lot in sponsor events in America. Ricciardo, with his profile and image, is therefore the best driver for us,'' Marko said at Sport Bild.
Nothing will change about the regular drivers in 2023 at Red Bull Racing. Two-time world champion Verstappen still has a contract until 2028 and Perez also signed this season until 2024. The Mexican himself has a desire to compete for the title, but Marko does not see that happening any time soon.
''Checo can certainly win a race or two, but at the moment I don't see him challenging Max over a whole season. Generally, I don't see anyone with the same conditions (as Max) being able to do that,'' the Austrian concluded.
