Max Verstappen has finished on top, once again, this time finishing only 0.170 seconds ahead of Fernando Alonso in FP2 at the
Spanish Grand Prix.
The Dutchman stormed into the lead within the first 10 minutes of the session and never looked back, improving over the rest of the hour.
Ferrari looked like they might have a chance of finishing close to the Red Bull driver, with
Carlos Sainz battling for the top spot in the opening minutes, but it wouldn’t be the case.
Charles Leclerc and Sainz ended up claiming the sixth and seventh spots.
Alonso and Aston Martin were running a new front wing on his and
Lance Stroll’s car but it seemed to work swimmingly for the Spaniard, as his teammate finished all the way down in 18th, compared to his second-place finish.
Between Verstappen, Alonso, and the Ferrari duo saw Niko Hulkenberg,
Sergio Perez and
Esteban Ocon hold third, fourth and fifth, after some superb flying laps.
Mercedes struggled much like Ferrari.
George Russell and
Lewis Hamilton never managed to find the pace to push them into the top five. Russell also had difficulty negotiating turn 9, as he ran over the white and red curb multiple times and then had to find the gravel trap at turn 11 after
Oscar Piastri blocked the Brit.
Russell claimed eighth place, with Hamilton in 11th and
Valtteri Bottas and
Pierre Gasly rounding out the top 10 between the two teammates.
McLaren, AlphaTauri and
Williams all had tranquil sessions and never found themselves in the top 10 during FP2. De Vries finished in the top five in the first practice session this weekend, but ended up in 16th, with
Yuki Tsunoda one place behind.
Piastri and Norris placed 12th and 14th, with Zhou Guanyu splitting the two and
Kevin Magnussen slotting in behind the Brit.
Williams will want to forget about this session and look at as much data as they can, with Alex Albon and
Logan Sargeant claiming the final two places on the grid.
