Max Verstappen was the fastest in qualifying once again, claiming his sixth pole position of the season, and the seventh pole position in a row. The Dutchman was a tenth quicker than Charles Leclerc in P2. Carlos Sainz rounded out the top three, out-qualifying Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez.

Behind the top four are the two McLarens who are line astern, with Lando Norris finishing fifth ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri. The two Mercedes improved on their SQ2 elimination and made it into Q3, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton qualifying in P7 and P8 respectively. The Haas of Nico Hulkenberg had another great qualifying session this season, with the German placing his car in the ninth grid slot for the start of the race. The VCARB of Yuki Tsunoda rounds out the top ten. Teammate Daniel Ricciardo, after a fantastic P4 in the sprint race, could only qualify in 18th and will start at the back of the grid after receiving a grid penalty from the Chinese Grand Prix.

The weekend so far

At the first of three USA races this season, the Miami Grand Prix is the second of six sprint races in 2024 after China last time out. This year, the two sprint events preceded qualifying for the Grand Prix, so teams could make changes between the sprint race and qualifying. But like in Shanghai, Verstappen moved into clear air in Saturday's sprint race and stayed ahead with very quick lap times. However, the Ferraris were not too far behind the RB20 and are quietly confident about their changes for today's race. 

The Dutchman won the sprint race on Saturday morning and has already scored eight points this weekend. Leclerc held onto his P2 from sprint qualifying, and Perez did the same from P3, rounding out the sprint race podium. The Prancing Horse will hope that their pace can continue today. Ricciardo held onto his fantastic P4 and gained some vital points for Racing Bulls, with Sainz finishing just three-tenths behind the Australian as the chequered flag fell.
