Max Verstappen saw the first free practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix literally fall into the water. The chaotic session did start on time, but drivers were not allowed to enter the track as the pit lane exit remained closed. The Dutchman got no further than the fifth time.

Especially in one particular corner, the drivers had a lot of trouble. There was little grip, and if you had to go over the grass you were unpleasantly surprised, because there was a lot of water. It looked like a swimming pool. It happened to the Dutch Red Bull driver, among others. "Yes, that was a little off-road trip," the reigning world champion told Gianpiero Lambiase over board radio.

Verstappen's race engineer replied over the board radio with: "Yes, we saw that." Verstappen was definitely not the only one who struggled with the corner. Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas and Logan Sargeant all managed to stop their fast lap after they spun or shot straight across the tarmac.
