Daniel Ricciardo will drive for Visa Cash App RB until the end of the season, the Faenza-based team confirmed to GPblog. The Australian scored half as many points as Yuki Tsunoda in the first 14 Grands Prix of the season, but they see no reason to put Liam Lawson in the car now.

Only in three races (excluding a fourth place finish at the Miami Sprint Race) did Ricciardo score points in the first half of the season. Entering the summer break, the driver from Perth has 11 points behind his name. Teammate Tsundoa finished in the top-ten in seven races (and a P8 in the Miami sprint race).

Liam Lawson might have secretly hoped for a chance to drive the VCARB-01 at Zandvoort. However, the Red Bull junior who creditably filled in for Ricciardo at five GPs last year will have to be patient. Possibly, an opportunity at Visa Cash App RB does await him at the start of 2025.

While Yuki Tsunoda already has a contract extension in his pocket, Ricciardo does not. His contract expires after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It is unclear what Ricciardo's chances of a new commitment are.

Young talent

Helmut Marko did recently let slip that the shareholders of Red Bull Racing's sister team want Visa Cash App RB to start giving young talents a chance again. Whether that will happen as soon as next year remains to be seen.

Red Bull does have two candidates for that from its own academy. The aforementioned Lawson showed last year that he is not inferior to some of the other drivers currently competing in Formula 1, and Isack Hadjar is also emerging. The 19-year-old Frenchman won the feature race last weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, taking a big step towards the Formula 2 title.
