Mexico in shock after likely Perez resignation: 'Criticism seems unjustified'
- Ludo van Denderen
For Sergio Perez, his association with Red Bull Racing is likely to come to an end next Sunday. The driver is expected to get his farewell from the Austrian racing stable. Mexican fans and media are in shock, now that the country's most popular sportsman is likely to be out of Formula 1. Expressions of support for Perez are pouring in.
The leading Mexican sports medium Esto emphatically takes Perez's side in a major article. The website cites a statement by Helmut Marko, who stated that 'nobody would become champion with the Red Bull except Verstappen'. Esto sees this as proof that Perez is being judged unfairly by the media. "The criticism of Sergio Pérez for the poor season he has had may seem somewhat unjustified," the site states.
Mexican newspaper Record does not believe Perez will disappear from Formula 1 completely after Abu Dhabi. The newspaper believes that after this season, the veteran is "probably" assured of a seat at Cadillac, when it joins the sport in 2026. Incidentally, this is a rumour that as yet is not based on anything, as GPblog has not heard from Cadillac that Perez is (currently) on a shortlist.
Fans massively behind Perez
Fans of Perez, meanwhile, are showing their support on social media. Under a Red Bull Racing post, they massively let it be known that they will "always be behind you". Some even say they would give their lives for Perez. Moreover, not everyone believes the Mexican is likely to have to leave. For instance, some doubt the sincerity of the media and are convinced that Perez will also be on the F1 grid in 2025.
