Bortoleto gets advice from ex-Sauber driver Bottas: 'It won't be easy'
When rumours around the second seat at Sauber (soon-to-become Audi) were brought up, two names were usually considered to be in the running: Gabriel Bortoleto and Valtteri Bottas. In the end, the young Brazilian was chosen by Swiss team, and he will replace the Finn next season. Bottas was asked about what advice would he give for the next Sauber driver.
After winning the F3 and F2 championships in back-to-back seasons, Gabriel Bortoleto now graduates to Formula 1. Leaving McLaren's junior programme, the Brazilian joins Sauber on a multi-year deal. On the other hand, Bottas will now join Mercedes as a 'third driver'.
When asked about the Brazilian, the 10-time Grand Prix winner has a clear advice for him. "Well, to any new driver, my advice always is not to be too harsh on yourself and give yourself some time. Because it takes lots of learning in this sport. But the drivers nowadays, they're so well prepared, they have lots of support, so I think he'll be fine," the Finn began to GPblog among others.
Bottas expects another 'tough' year for former team
However, it will not be easy for Bortoleto, Bottas sees, but thinks Nico Hulkenberg can be a good teammate for him. "I'm expecting a tough season. The regs are not changing for next year. All the cars that the teams have now, they're not going to change massively. So I don't think it's going to be an easy rookie season, but I think he's got Nico on his side that he can learn from for sure, he's got lots of experience. But yes, I'm expecting a difficult season [for him]."
The young Brazilian could already test for Sauber on the Tuesday following the Abu Dhabi GP, where he could also secure the F2 title against Isack Hadjar. The two rookies can face off once again next year, as Hadjar was announced to join Racing Bulls for the '25 season as well.
