Will the Dutch Grand Prix move to Assen? 'Lines have been thrown out'
- Ludo van Denderen
It came as a big blow to Formula 1 fans in the Netherlands that after the 2026 season, the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort will disappear from the F1 calendar as a result of the circuit organisers of the race no longer considering it financially responsible to take big risks. But perhaps the Netherlands will still keep its own Grand Prix? After all, the Assen circuit might have the appetite for hosting an F1 race.
Arjan Bos, the chairman of the TT in the Dutch town, indicated at a New Year's meeting that the biggest dream is to bring in F1. Subsequently, Bos did say to RTV Drenthe: "But I have to be very careful in that. I don't even know if Formula 1 is eager for that."
The chairman is aware that Formula 1 is increasingly looking outside Europe when it comes to expanding the F1 calendar. "In other words: Europe has to shrink and then it is not obvious that the Netherlands will continue to organise a Grand Prix."
Assen feels support for hosting a Grand Prix
Still, Bos offers Dutch racing fans something of hope. After a lot of money has been invested in the circuit in Assen and the support of the local community for hosting an F1 race is also felt, he states, "And if we can organise it, then we will definitely look into it and are positive about it in principle."
Furthermore, Bos reveals that lines have already been drawn, although he does not make it clear to whom exactly.
