Many countries have produced Formula One drivers, an Ireland is no exception. Since F1 began, five drivers from Ireland (not Northern Ireland), have taken to the track, so on St Patrick's Day, here they are:
Joe Kelly (born in 1913) - Alta GP, 2 Grands Prix
Joe Kelly was Ireland's first Formula One driver. Kelly, born in Leinster, raced his own Alta GP car at the 1950 and 1951 British Grand Prix. The 1950 Grand Prix was the first of the modern day F1 era. Unfortunatley for Kelly, he was not classified in the results of either race, scoring no championship points.
Derek Daly (born in 1953) - Hesketh, Ensign, Tyrell, March, Theodore, Williams, 64 (49 starts) Grands Prix
Ireland's second driver, Derek Daly made his F1 debut at the 1978 United States Grand Prix. Racing for four years, Daly managed 15 championship points before he finished his career at the 1982 Caesar's Palace Grand Prix.
David Kennedy (born in 1953) - Shadow, 7 (0 starts) Grands Prix
David Kennedy, had one season in Formula One, but he failed to qualify for the start of any of his seven Grand Prix's. Kennedy made his debut at the 1980 Argentinian Grand Prix and his last appearance at the 1980 French Grand Prix.
Tommy Byrne (born in 1958) - Theodore, 5 (2 starts) Grands Prix
Tommy Byrne joined the Theodore Racing team midway through the 1982 season following Jan Lammers decision to quit. Byrne made his debut at the German Grand Prix. Despite qualifying for two starts, Byrne failed to finish either before ending his F1 career at the 1982 Caesar's Palace Grand Prix, the same race as Derek Daly.
Ralph Firman (born 1975) - Jordan Grand Prix, 15 (14 starts) Grands Prix
Ralph Firman is the last Irishman to compete in Formula One. Firman raced in all but two Grand Prix's in the 2003 after making his debut at the Australian Grand Prix. Firman scored a singular Championship point at the Spanish Grand Prix, but his F1 career only lasted one season.
Alongside these five Irish F1 drivers, six Northern Irishmen have raced in F1, including Eddie Irvine and John Watson.
