Brundle has an astonishing theory: 'Verstappen drove slower on purpose'

Max Verstappen finished second at the Dutch Grand Prix, behind race winner Lando Norris by 23 seconds. Lando Norris rocketed away from the Dutchman, who only saw the gap widen lap after lap. However, former F1 driver and Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle thinks Verstappen could have gone faster than he actually showed, he stated after the race.

The Formula 1 world has become a completely different place in 2024. Verstappen started the season dominantly by winning seven of the first 10 races. However, the ever-so-dominant Dutchman hasn't won any of the last five. Clearly, Red Bull is struggling and things need to change if the team wants to compete for wins again.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner stated after the race that the team had learned a lot during the weekend at Zandvoort. Brundle thinks he knows what that would be about: “I’m going to guess about car setup and strategies and all the normal things about going racing." He stated.

The difference between Norris and Verstappen suddenly became very big at Zandvoort. Brundle, therefore, has a theory: “I would hazard a guess that was not as fast as Max could go. He knew he couldn’t beat Lando and dropping back a bit like that, it's going to give the factory a hurry up, isn’t it? I’d be pretty sure of that.” The 158-time Grand Prix starter believes.
