Daniel Ricciardo suggests he failed to make it into Q3 because of Lance Stroll's spin at the start of a wet Q2. The track conditions deteriorated as the session went on, meaning Ricciardo faced an impossible task to escape the drop zone.
The Red Bull driver was nearly eliminated from Q1, but he managed to pull it out of the bag. Following the session, Ricciardo provided the media with an explanation.
"Starting Q2 obviously the rain was coming so basically first on track was getting the best track," Ricciardo said in an interview on race fans.
"The first lap Stroll spun in front of me, so I had a yellow [flag] in sector two and couldn't improve that lap. And then it just got wetter and wetter so basically, the one lap I had, I had Stroll spin."
Last weekend in Germany, Ricciardo started from the back of the grid as he opted to take penalties at Hockenheim. He thought it would give him the best chance in Hungary, but it wasn't to be.
His team-mate didn't have the best of results either as he finished behind both Mercedes, Ferrari, a Renault and a Toro Rosso. With a drier track tomorrow, the advantages which Red Bull expected on this circuit, should come through.
