The doctors treating
Niki Lauda say his recovery from his lung transplant is going well. He is making progress and is expected to make a full recovery.
Lauda was fully conscious and could be extubated, and breathe independently 24 hours after the operation.
The statement continued issued by the Austrian General Hospital and Medical University of Vienna confirms the developments since the operation have been "very satisfactory."
It continued: "Since then there has been a continuous improvement. All organs function well. The patient will continue to be cared for at AKH Wien until he recovers completely."
It will still take many weeks before Lauda can return to work. He is expected to be out until at least October.
Mercedes team boss earlier in the week wished him all the best.
"The recovery he faces is not a race. But I'm sure he will soon be telling every nurse and doctor that he has had enough of hospital."
From us all here at GPBlog, we wish Niki Lauda the best of recoveries.
