Ferrari looked set to fight for both championships with Red Bull Racing at the start of the season, but nothing could be further from the truth. Meanwhile, it also has to watch out for Mercedes, which is in fine form. Paul di Resta is worried about the Italian squad, he told Sky Sports.

The former Formula One driver thinks it will not be easy for the team to close the gap again. "I fear for Ferrari because since July, they've not really been in with a chance to win a race. They're out of it and Mercedes have caught them," he explained.

"Unquestionably, Mercedes have overtaken them on a Sunday. On a Saturday, I think they can still pull it out but I fear where the Ferrari development path is going unless they've switched off that early when they realised it was out of reach."

For Ferrari, there is little left to fight for. Max Verstappen already managed to secure his world title in Japan, while Red Bull managed to take the constructors' championship in the United States. That seemed to be the moment for Ferrari to focus on 2023.

Ferrari can build on current season

Di Resta believes Ferrari can build on the current season despite its lesser form. Indeed, at the start of this calendar year, the racing stable showed what it is capable of. "That concept came out of the box absolutely superbly. It's gone on and it's not quite there."
