A warning shot to his F1 opponents: "I feel like a different man"

Should Logan Sargeant require any excuses about his performance after the 2024 Formula 1 season, he won't be looking back at his quotes from the press conference at the Williams car launch. The American driver expects himself to be much more competitive in the upcoming season and claims he is in the best physical shape of his life after missing the mark before his debut year 12 months ago.

Honest reflection

Remarkably, every seat at the chequered flag of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will filled by the exact same driver for the start of the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix. The second seat at Williams was the last to be confirmed. James Vowles and the Williams team left it late (compared to everyone else in 2023), but Sargeant was eventually confirmed to get another year at the British team. Vowles, in particular, is keen to ensure Sargeant gets the best possible chance.

Starting as a rookie has never been more challenging in Formula 1. The calendar is absolutely brutal these days. There is a high number of street circuits in the first half of the season, night races to contend with, new venues, and the interest from the press is at an all-time high. And rookies will not want to be looking in the rear-view mirror as several recent F2 Champions wait on the sidelines. Sargeant survived all of that, arguably by the skin of his teeth.

The American scored just one point last season, which resulted from two disqualifications at his home race. However, he still had to be there to take advantage of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc's unfortunate situation. One point might not sound too disastrous on its own, but Williams finished seventh in the Constructors World Championship after his teammate, Alex Albon, scored 27 points. Albon completely wiped the floor with him in the teammate duels. Speaking at a press event attended by GPblog.com, Sargeant seems to know why he was off the pace.

"Throughout the season, I learned that I need to manage myself much better. I let myself get very drained throughout the season. I let that affect me off the track, which ultimately brings it onto the track. I wasn't physically in the place I need to be. And I've done everything I can to get on top of that," Sargeant said.

Fighting talk

"I'm five kilos heavier than I was at the end of last year, and I feel much more healthy and much more ready to go. From a driving point of view, I think just having that reference at every single track that I go to what a Formula One car is capable of, I can now really start on a much better foot going into these weekends. And I know much more of what I can do behind the scenes as well to attract performance. I would say now I'm trying to do my best to almost over-prepare," he added.

"I feel like a different man, to be honest. I feel physically in the best shape I've ever been in. I've changed my training regime to what I feel like I need to work on most. Having a year of knowledge, finally having a break to do something about where I was physically and mentally was such a good chance for me to reinvent myself and come back."

Sargeant will need to get much closer to Albon to retain his seat for 2025. There are so many drivers on the market for Williams to choose from that the pressure will be immense. But the mentality shown during pre-season can be seen as a warning shot to his opponents.
