Organisers of the Mexican Grand Prix say they are confident that a new agreement with Liberty Media can be reached to extend the country's race on the F1 calendar. Since returning to the calendar in 2015, the venue has proved hugely popular with fans in Mexico, regularly drawing in high numbers.
Organisers revealed that the race on Sunday was a sell-out with a 135,407-strong crowd there to witness a hugely entertaining race that resulted in a dominant win for Max Verstappen and the crowning of the 2018 world champion in Lewis Hamilton.
Speaking to Reuters, chief executive of CIE, the body that runs the organisation of the race, Alejandro Soberon said that the event had drawn in massive amounts of money each year alongside the backing of state funding.
“This has always been positioned as a country marketing project. This size of project cannot be done otherwise,” he said.
“They (the new administration) are going to evaluate the results of the four races and then make a decision on extension. I am very respectful of whatever the new government has to say and make an opinion,” he added when asked if he was confident about the outcome.
“When I see all the data and everything that this race has brought the country, I am very confident that in some fashion we are going to find a way to continue the race.”
F1 managing director Ross Brawn also heaped praise upon the event, pointing to the Mexican Grand Prix as a great example to which Liberty should be following for future events.
“The race is an example of what we would like to see everywhere, with the right mix of a great sporting event with various forms of entertainment.”
