In 1993, Alain Prost was the best driver on the grid with flying colours. Of course, this was also his last year in Formula 1. Prost looks back at his championship 30 years ago. He talks about his last race at the unbeatable Williams and his time at McLaren.

Prost's final championship year in the Williams began differently from previous years. For the first time, the French driver was truly identified as the favourite for the upcoming season. Prost tells in the Beyond the grid podcast how he had to adapt in the Williams car, which used all new techonolgy.

Prost quits

Prost also talks about his first years in Formula 1 at McLaren. He liked this better than his last season at Williams. "I do not criticise at all, but it’s good this ambience is good for some drivers and maybe not as good for other drivers. At least at McLaren you are in a family."

After Prost drove his last race, he was happy to be done. "The first few weeks, you wake up at 9 or 10 o’clock and then you realise that you are really young and you don’t want to have this kind of life." He also said that after his three-month break, he really didn't feel like continuing racing.

Interestingly, Prost was as fast of faster than Senna on race day.
Prost had more fastest laps. He was tied 1-1 in 2 seasons with Senna
at McLaren. Senna excelled in qualifying and in the rain. I consider
Lewis Hamilton at Prost's level or slightly below. Prost is one of the
most underrated F1 drivers because he was overshadowed by the charismatic
personality that Senna was. Senna's mystique was also enhanced by his
death, however Prost was essentially his equal. Senna was a much more
ruthless and dirty driver than Prost. I admire them both immensely.

Totally agree. To me Prost is some sort of hidden behind magic Senna, but he is underrated by ignorants only.

Nah, the best was the Brazilian guy who won five races in the third best car that year, including Donnington, Interlagos and Adelaide, where he snatched pole yet again by an issue with the team's radio, who were trying to let him know that he was running out of fuel and needed to come in. He didn't, bagged pole and won from the ever dominant Williams Renault. Prost was the third best driver that year. Senna and Schumacher were better by far.

Not even to mention the stolen title in 1989. When Prost run to see Balestre in order to get gifted with the championship.

Senna was no saint either. No ?

I've never pretended that.
This is no reason for taking the championship from him.

For sure. I mean Senna was not an angel and influenced quite a lot of victories when those guys were at McLaren.

And somehow this tends to be balanced if you consider that Prost should have won in 1988.
With the same regulations Prost would have beaten Lauda for world champion in 1984 instead of losing by half a point.
In 1983 Prost was stolen the title too.

To me this is just history.
