McLaren had a much more favorable weekend in Saudi Arabia than in Bahrain. Whereas the Woking-based racing team finished outside the points with both cars in the opening weekend, it picked up six points in Jeddah thanks to
Lando Norris' seventh place finish.
Daniel Ricciardo also looked to be on his way to a points finish, but he suffered technical problems and had to retire his MCL36.
After the disappointment of the previous weekend,
McLaren seemed to be on its way to a double points finish in Jeddah, until Ricciardo crashed out with technical problems. According to the Australian, however, that does not mean that the team has made great strides.
Ricciardo and Norris not happy with MCL36
He cites the characteristics of the
Jeddah Corniche Circuit as the main reason things looked better for the British team. Despite this, Ricciardo is hopeful that the "horrible race in Bahrain" will not be repeated, but the driver believes that drastic changes are needed to do so.
"I think the track just suited us better. Until we get significant updates, I think any top ten finish for now will feel like a win," said Ricciardo according to
Nextgen-Auto.com.
Norris joins his teammate's words. He too believes that the performance gains were mainly in the nature of the circuit. "Other than that we didn't change much, but it shows how differently the car can perform from track to track and what its strengths and weaknesses are," Norris said.
