Just after two rounds with Red Bull Racing, that adventure has now ended for Liam Lawson. In Japan, the driver explained how he found out that he had to return to Racing Bulls.
During the period between the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix, it was announced that Red Bull will make a driver switch with immediate effect. Yuki Tsunoda will now be Max Verstappen's teammate in Japan.
"I had no idea in China. It was something that was decided, I guess, the Monday or Tuesday afterwards. I found out after China, basically. It was, I think for all of us probably more unexpected, but it was after the weekend," Lawson began to share how he found out the news in Suzuka.
"It was more of a done deal, I would say. I guess I left China starting preparations for Japan and basically I had a phone call saying that this was what was going to happen," he continued.
Lawson has more experience in Japan and the Suzuka Circuit, given he has competed in Super Formula before. The New Zealander wished to give it a go with Red Bull in a more familiar environment for him.
"As I said I think I was more surprised, obviously it's very early in the season. And I would say I was hoping to go to a track that I'd raced before and have a clean weekend, to have a chance like that. But the decision obviously was made when I was told. So although it was tough to hear, I had one or two days to think about it," he explained.
Afterwards, once Lawson returned, he continued on focusing on his next challenge. "And then I was in Faenza with VCARB, starting preparations, seat fits and then you're basically just focused on the job and as I said, I have the opportunity to still be in Formula 1 and still racing and that is the main thing for me. And with this opportunity, I'm excited to be here. Obviously, it's been a strong start to the season for this team, for VCARB. So I guess it's exciting for me to now to come in here in this position," he concluded.
