Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel claims his ninth placed finish in qualifying was "not the position we deserved".
Vettel believes himself and Ferrari both deserved better after the wrong choice of tyre ended his hopes of a pole finish in Japan.
Both Ferraris started Q3 on intermediate tyres but then they were caught out by the drying track which meant their rivals could set times.
The rain returned shortly after, messing their dry-tyre runs up - but Vettel's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen managed to qualify in P4.
"Obviously it's not the position we deserved to be in," Vettel told Sky Sports F1. "I think we have a better speed than ninth but we start there and we'll see how it goes."
Vettel ran wide at Degner on his first flying lap and also went off at Spoon and with the rain later returning, he was unable to improve on his position.
"I think the first run was sort of OK," Vettel continued. "Obviously I had a mistake in Spoon so I lost most of my time there. But obviously the second run we didn't make it out in time because the rain came, so we were too late."
The world championship looks all but over for Vettel now, with his rival Lewis Hamilton on pole for tomorrow's race, whilst also being 50 points ahead of the Scuderia driver.
