Toto Wolff has admitted his
Mercedes team’s relief after their good start to the 2019
Formula 1 season, despite having a difficult pre-season testing in Barcelona.
Mercedes appeared to struggle in pre-season testing, making Ferrari favourites for the early stages of the actual season. However, it hasn’t panned out that way with Mercedes being utterly dominant securing three consecutive one-two finishes, in Australia, Bahrain and China, the first time since
Williams’ dominant 1992 season.
Mercedes didn’t expect much from Melbourne but Wolff revealed the team’s pleasure after the win as well as the satisfaction of bouncing back in China after being much slower than Ferrari, despite the win.
Speaking at the press conference Wolff said: “It was a great start of the season; we had a difficult Barcelona testing where we started to understand how to set up the car toward the end of the test only, and then we came to Melbourne and we had a very positive surprise.
“That was met with a little bit more scepticism then in the second race, where clearly the Ferrari package was the quickest on track.
“We came back in China very strong, and that is very pleasing, but three races out of 21 is very early and we mustn't be carried away with a great start.”
