Following the immediate aftermath of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Toto Wolff called Valtteri Bottas Hamilton's "wingman". On the Formula 1 magazine website, the Mercedes team principal explained this comment.
"This was not about the championship, but about how Valtteri provided cover for Lewis. We have no number one and two in the world championship, this was purely about the race," Wolff said.
The Austrian was then full of praise for Bottas.
"He drove the best race with us in two years. The way he kept driving on old tyres and kept the Ferrari's behind him: very surprising."
At first, Bottas was struck by the comments. But then later in the evening, he took to Twitter claiming that he understood the comments and trusted the team treat the two drivers fairly.
