'Chances for De Vries at Alpine increase after Herta test called off'

Colton Herta's test at Alpine will not go ahead. According to Motorsport-magazin.com Red Bull has lost patience to bring the American to F1 and therefore cancel the test.

No test for Herta

Alpine is looking for a new driver for 2023 and ended up with Pierre Gasly. However, the Frenchman has a contract with Red Bull for 2023 and so Red Bull wanted to be able to get a replacement. Herta was seen as the ultimate candidate, but now that the FIA does not want to make any changes to the super licence system, Red Bull seems to have given up hope.

Indeed, according to Motorsport-magazin.com, Herta's planned test at Alpine will not go ahead. Alpine offered Herta this test to collect more licence points to ensure that Gasly might be released. However, Red Bull has lost patience and would no longer want to put so much effort into the IndyCar driver. This would also hold Gasly to his 2023 contract.

Alpine also needs to look further afield and perhaps given Gasly's relationship with Esteban Ocon, that is not such a bad thing. Also driving during Alpine's test at the Hungaroring are Nyck de Vries, Jack Doohan and Antonio Giovinazzi. Doohan is an Alpine junior, but given Alpine's desire to put an experienced driver in the seat, not a top favourite for the seat.

Contenders at Alpine

De Vries is a strong candidate for the seat though after his strong performance for Williams at the Italian Grand Prix. There, he showed he could score points and with 27 years and a Formula E and 2 title, the Dutchman has plenty of experience. Giovinazzi, however, has the advantage of three years of F1 experience and may have an edge in that respect.

An outsider for the seat is also Nico Hulkenberg. The German is also mentioned at Haas, but is also no stranger within the Alpine team. There he drove his last regular season in F1 in 2019, before impressing in three years without a permanent seat mainly as a fill-in at Racing Point/Aston Martin.

Ocon's wishes do not matter. Herta has stated he does not want an exemption as well. He will probably do some free practice outings to acquire points for a potential move in a year's time. Gasly is out of contract in a year's time. I suspect Alpine will put DeVries in the car for a year and see how he goes. If he is fast, and I am sure he will be, he will stay. If not, they will acquire Gasly for the next season. All speculation of course.

I don't see what the big issue is with Herta doing some FP's. He has 32 SL points, he needs 8 more. 1 FP = 1 point. Alpine is sure to grant him at least a couple. And if he is to drive with Alpha Tauri next year, then a few FP's with them can only be beneficial.

If they are dumb enough to hire Giovinazzi then they have no one to blame but themselves for yet another bad season.

Mick is a better option. Especially since he has experience, and Ocon openly says that he wants him as a teammate.

you mean his experience at being off the pace, getting his ass handed to him by his team mate and crashing all the time ?

I agree, but again he has that experience and that's why I would really like him in another stronger team. He had some good flashes this year, so I would give him one more another chance. Almost when I see what the other options are.

Since Monaco Mick has beaten Kevin at every race except Belgium (not counting his DNF in Canada). In Italy he would have been in the points had it not been for the slow pitstop. He has been in a couple of good battles coming out on top as well.

no one should care what Ocon wants, he is the average driver. Mick is even worse, I hope he will be gone from f1 after this season - I like him, but in my opinion there should be no place for him

I would like to see him for another year at Alpin. We have seen much worse drivers for a couple of seasons, so we can do it one more time.

MowMiCzule 16 September 2022 at 18:04+ 5195

Because his last name is schumacher? in my opinion, this vicious circle will never go away, but it can be reduced. that's why the time has come for Mick, he showed what he was supposed to show for 2 years (meaning nothing), it's time to give someone new a chance

MowMiCzule 17 September 2022 at 14:10+ 5195

What formula are you watching? xD Mick lost to kmag enormously this year - remember that kmag is not an eagle and he had a break. Two years is enough time in this sport, time for a new driver.

MowMiCzule 16 September 2022 at 22:44+ 5195

after 1.5 years he finally finished in points, and had quit good TWO race. wow, just amazing xD lattifi had better stats in williams last year and i guess comparing to Latiffie is not something spectacular xD In my opinion, Mick and Latiffi are the worst drivers at the moment. There is nothing personal here, because I like them both very much, but Formula deserves better.

Perhaps you are stuck in May?

@MowMiCzule I don't mean that because of the last name. Every driver has the goal of beating his teammate, and so far Mick has done it in both years. I would like to see him in a more competitive car. I would rather watch him in the future, because he will certainly be better, than drivers like Magnussen, Giovinazzi, Hulkenberg, all of whom we have already seen and cannot offer us anything new.

Mike tt 16 September 2022 at 19:26+ 13220

Ocon wants Mick as a teammate, so he can be Latified.

Really think this year's silly season is something else.
