McLaren has once again shown that it can compete with Red Bull Racing in the pit lane in 2022. The Woking-based team delivered the fastest pit stop in Austria, but Red Bull are hot on their heels.
For years, Red Bull Racing ruled the pit lane, but with new 18-inch tyres from Pirelli, everyone is starting from scratch. McLaren appear to be practising a lot on pit stops, as the team set the fastest pit stop time on the Red Bull Ring. With a 2.25s pit stop it set the second fastest time this season. The fastest time is still in the name of Ferrari with a 2.23s during the Spanish GP.
Red Bull Racing was fast again in Austria. Max Verstappen's pit stop on lap 58 lasted just 2.33s, giving the team another 18 points in the league. In the standings, Red Bull retains the lead with 252 points. McLaren, however, is hot on Red Bull's heels with 234 points.
In the rest of the top ten we find two cars from Ferrari and Alpine. Williams, Aston Martin, AlphaTauri and Mercedes also deliver one car for a place in the top ten. The times are surprisingly fast. Of the 42 pit stops, no less than twenty were under three seconds.
