Damon Hill has expressed surprise at the drive through penalty given to Fernando Alonso at the end of the Australian Grand Prix. The Aston Martin driver played a decisive role in the crash witnessed by George Russell, according to the stewards. Hill finds it on the heavy side and argues that it is also your job as a driver to sometimes do unexpected things.
The stewards' verdict stated that Alonso braked 100 metres earlier than he had done up to that point in the race. The Spaniard also braked very lightly at a point where he had not done so earlier in the race. However, the braking was not the biggest factor in slowing down; that was the fact that Alonso had downshifted earlier. Alonso, in the stewards' view, was driving slower than necessary, endangering another driver.
Hill looks at it slightly differently. "George got surprised, it looked to me that he was very surprised to find the closing speed to Fernando to be so great. Or he just got too close, he was pushing too hard and got understeer because he was under his rear gearbox. I do think this is where we get into the difficult area of what is racing and what is dastardly tricks," the one-time world champion told the F1 Nation Podcast.
"I think you have to assume that the FIA want to stop people doing things that are potentially dangerous, but then it is dangerous! Motor racing is dangerous," said the 63-year-old Briton. "You have to be careful when you’re going for a move on someone, if you’re closing on them you’ve got to be prepared for them to do things that are gamesmanship. I just think this has to be part of the sport, being wary of an individual because they’ve got form or they’re clever or whatever. I just think the idea that you’ve got to stop people from doing anything unexpected, that’s not really racing.”
The people complaining about Alonso's driving, have never driven in NY City or New Jersey.
I am not saying I agree or disagree with the penalty.
What strikes me most is how Hill would have cried foul in the 2021 season if Max had pulled such a move on Hamilton. Hill was quite vocal in his bogus claim of Max's "dangerous driving" during the 2021 season. It is very interesting how Hill applies his standards quite subjectively.
Side note:
Since Hamilton had trouble beating Max throughout the 2021 season, Hamilton apologists had to come up with something to detract from Max's performances. The theme of Max's so-called "dangerous driving" showed me how naive and limited in perspective so many had about racing. None had even seen Senna race for example.
Danger is an inextricable part of racing. All the first-time, young fans who mistakenly equated the rules of the road in public driving as applying to racing, echoed that nauseating chorus.
Exactly what I said from the beginning. What a ridiculous call.
It's normally people who never raced before that barks the loudest.
Vegan take note.
Absolutely agree with Hill on this one. These guys are supposedly the best in the world. They should expect the unexpected. George reacted clearly to what Alonso did. The crash wasnt caused by Alonso or George. This move has been done many times in the past without issue from many many drivers. The cause of the crash is the modern day F1 cars. Between the excessive weight, poor handling characteristics due to a combination of this weight and aero development, the cars dont react as expected in certain situations.
Instead of punishing drivers for actually racing, the FIA should be looking at how to reduce the effects of the front and rear wings, getting rid of these idiotic hybrid PUs and getting the cars back down to 600ish KG. Then we will have proper racing again.
They better start fueling the cars even heavier as lift and coast will be the next thing to be tagged as dangerous driving by these ridiculous stewards
"The Aston Martin driver played a decisive role in the crash witnessed by George Russell"
Why keeping saying this? ?♂️
Other than that, who would have thought I would agree one day with most Hill said ?
Hill made some good points with what he say .why cant you change how go in corner its part of racing .now then they have to do this all season with it know .
"who would have thought I would agree one day with most Hill said"
Total eclipse frequency at the least or Haley's comet frequency is more likely...
I'll add, that owning chickens is an effective way to throw money away.
Chickens lay ~250 eggs/year in their prime.
A dozen eggs cost ~£2.50 or ~£0.20/egg.
To raise a chicken for a year is ~£280 or ~£1.40/egg.
Sure, you get fertilizer and a meal when the chicken is older but the ROI just isn't there. Much like Junior Stroll as a F1 driver...
"A ribeye from the butcher goes for $49-69/kg, leaning more towards 69 lastly."
That is wrong on so many levels! I'm not sure how much individual beef bits cost here. I "work" on a farm for a friend and I get a half a beef every 18 months for ~$1500. I also harvest ~10 White-tail deer a year. Very lean meat.
I'm used to the hilly bits on a bike. A typical 100k ride has ~2000 meters of elevation gain so save me a spot. I'll be right over ?
We don't have those Rubia Gallega here either. Gets imported from Galicia in Spain and costs almost as much as the fancy Japanese Wagyu.
I Know Rubia Gallega because I lived in that area from the age of 3 until the age of 7. My grandma had lots of these.
Ever since I go back regularly to get good doses of steaks and much more.
I can get there from a butcher the premium version, which get regularly messaged, washed and also get to drink 1 bottle of red wine every day, for $9-14/Kg in prime cuts like Ribeye, New York strip and so on.
An 1.2Kg on bone ribeye with home made fries and fresh vegetables in a restaurant goes for $20-25 including a glass of nice red wine.
Beef over here is by far not as good and way more expensive. A ribeye from the butcher goes for $49-69/kg, leaning more towards 69 lastly.
But everything is expensive here, so I guess it's alright.
Other than that, Switzerland is indeed great for road bikes. The roads are generally of very good quality and the landscapes are breathtaking. The calves and thighs swell decently, it goes pretty often up and down.
Yeah these ugly cows that are destroying the planet. My contribution to saving the planet is to eat them in large quantities before they do even more damage. ?
We don't have that breed here. Maybe I should come spend a week or 6 and bring me road bike. I'd love to ride there.
I can't get through to tge ID10T. He's book smart so I'll give him that. Common sense, like Elvis, left that particular building he calls a hat rack.
According to some the cows contribute more to pollution than jets. I expect Boeing and others paid for that bit of research.
What about "Rubia Gallega"?
They deliver my steaks of choice.
Even though it will be difficult to fit a beef into a F1 car, but I will have at least great steaks every day ?
ID10T should have indeed listened to you, unless in our days 1-2 equals 3.
Did he made at least coyotes and fox get fat at the end?
If so, he can now tell that he has contributed in saving the planet, something that seems to be en vogue and lucrative in our days.
The figures above don't include the structure cost to house them. Raising chicken hasn't been economically feasible on a small scale since I was a kid. My daughters ID10T husband wanted chickens since he had them as a kid.
I had to explain to him it was a waste of time and show him the data and yet he failed to grasp it. I also had to explain to him that the coyotes and fox will get fat unless you spend thousands in prevention.
You want to make money I'd suggest Holstein for dairy or Angus (Black or Red which are more docile and heat tolerant) for beef. With a Holstein the issue is the "fertilizer" and the goverment telling you when you are allowed to spread it. Better business plan.
Damn, and was I hoping to eventually get rich by rising chicken. 6 eggs cost about $4 over here, which makes $0.67/egg. But considering rising a chicken is about 1.40/egg, I better start a business in fashion and buy a F1 team once I earned $3.6 billions in order to give my chicken a F1 seat.
This will earn me fresh eggs every morning, chicken for dinner and a bunch of trophies to put on top of my fridge.
Thank for the tip, I'll start the business plan right now ?
