Lawson looks back with satisfaction: 'Overall, I'd say I'm very happy'

In 2023, Liam Lawson had a short stint at VCARB after Daniel Ricciardo got injured in Zandvoort. Other than that, Lawson has been waiting in the wings. Now, he is one of the top candidates to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull Racing. Despite having some rough races, Lawson still looks back with satisfaction.
"You can always look back at races, and you can always do a better job. I think overall it's been good. I'm happy with my performance, but obviously there's things you look at and learn from and there's for sure things that I can look at over these races and learn from to take into the future. But overall, I'd say I'm very happy," the 22-year-old driver replaced Daniel Ricciardo after the Singapore Grand Prix.
Lawson has scored four points since then. In his first race of the year in the United States (Austin) and in Brazil, he finished ninth. He was not able to earn points in Mexico as he collided with Red Bull driver Sergio Perez. In Qatar, he ran into Valtteri Bottas. Despite the collisions, he is still happy with the 2024 season.
Conversation with Horner
After the incident with Perez in Mexico City, Lawson spoke to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. The conversation did not cause Lawson to second-guess himself. "No. I think there's no change of mindset. What happened in Qatar was completely on me. I was avoiding Valtteri to try and not hit him. I pushed him off, that's why I went to apologise to him, so in that situation, the incident was my fault, that's why I apologised".
He concludes, "There's a full picture. Being a Formula One driver, it’s not just one thing. There's a list of boxes that you need to tick, and obviously, that's what I'm trying to do. But in this short time, trying to prove yourself can be difficult as well. It's not just about being fast, there's a lot of things you have to do to be a complete driver".
