During the Thursday press conference, Pierre Gasly discussed the seat swap between Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda, something Gasly himself has been through. Lawson was demoted after his performances at the Australian and Chinese Grands Prix. Now, Tsunoda is being given the chance to finally be Max Verstappen's teammate at his home race no less.

About what happened to him, Gasly said, "I don't really remember 2019.  I wish Liam all the best. I can, of course, empathize with some things."

However, he also said, "I also wish Yuki all the best. I think it's very difficult to judge from the outside. Only Liam knows his situation and all the details, and you just have to respect that,"

Tsunoda now has the chance to prove himself at his home race this weekend, the Japanese Grand Prix.

Gasly has confidence in Tsunoda and Lawson

While discussing the two drivers, Gasly said, "We’re all trying our best with the tools we have. I’ve got no doubts that both of them are going to do really well. It’s not really for me to comment because you never really know what’s going on."

Gasly knows what it feels like to be demoted from Red Bull Racing, as it happened to him. After being moved to Racing Bulls (then AlphaTauri), Gasly raced beside Tsunoda until he left the team for Alpine.
