Pierre Gasly says it was “unbelievable” how long the hyper soft tyres lasted during Sunday’s race in Monaco. The pink striped tyre lasted 37 laps on Gasly’s Toro Rosso.
The tyre made its race debut at the weekend, but drivers and teams were familiar with the compound having run with it in testing.
“Quite unbelievable how many laps we did with the hyper-soft in the first stint,” said Gasly.
“Before the race, I wasn’t confident at all with the tyres because we saw in practice that the degradation was massive.
“I tried to take really good care of the tyres at the beginning of the race and when everyone pitted, I started to push and we were just faster than all the guys who had pitted.”
Gasly picked up six points in his first race in Monaco gaining three places from his qualifying position.
Towards the end of the race, Gasly faced a threat from Hulkenberg but managed to hold him off to beat him by half a second. He went on to explain how he used the track to his advantage.
“After the VSC I was a bit worried because with the lower temperature, the super-soft takes a bit longer to warm up and he [Hulkenberg] had the hyper.
“But we are in Monaco, so I knew if I go a bit in the middle of the track he could not do anything.”
