Mercedes might have locked up the front row in Hungary, but team principal Toto Wolff still is conscious about the fact Ferrari gain four tenths on them in the first sector of the Hungaroring alone.
Yesterday's qualifying featured heavy rain, which threw most of the teams off, resulting in some unexpected results.
Red Bull, who were tipped to be favourites in Hungary, especially with Max Verstappen's track record in the rain, had a terrible qualifying session. Daniel Ricciardo couldn't even make it out of Q2, and Max Verstappen was beaten by a Renault and by Pierre Gasly's Toro Rosso, as the Dutchman mustered the seventh quickest time.
Mercedes must have been counting their blessings as the rain began to intensify. They clearly had the quickest car in the rain, simply finding more grip than the Ferrari's. On top of that, Lewis Hamilton is known to excel in the rain. Another one-two for Mercedes in qualifying, then.
“I think we were a bit lucky with the weather," Wolff admitted to Crash.net.
"On the dry we didn’t have the pace during the weekend.
“Curious to see what it would have been at the end, on the intermediate it was a little bit evenly matched and then straight out on the heavy wets we could see that we had a pace advantage.”
Why is Ferrari so much quicker (when it's dry) then? Is their chassis better, or is it the engine?
“It’s still the straights," Wolff explained.
"We have lost four tenths in the first sector and that is all related to power.
“I would say their [Ferrari's] package is the best.
"They have one of the best chassis also and insofar there is where is where it is most evident.”
Classic Mercedes, saying they're the underdog even though they're leading the championships and have the one-two in Hungary.
