Mercedes will face serious competition this season for the first time in years. While the German team has won the last seven Formula 1 seasons, Red Bull Racing are currently ahead in the world and constructors' championship. Mercedes hopes to change this situation soon.
The team of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas has been busy in recent weeks looking at how it can gain time on Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez. Both drivers showed during the Grands Prix of France and Austria that they have enough speed to beat Mercedes, which is different from recent years.
Team boss Toto Wolff previously indicated that fans should not expect any major updates this season. Nevertheless, Mercedes is adding a number of developed parts to the car this summer. Part of it will happen at Silverstone, the rest Mercedes will do for Zandvoort. "Nothing that will give us three or four-tenths," however, according to Auto, Motor und Sport, this is how the team sounds.
In this way, Mercedes hopes to make the car work more and more optimally. "You can improve performance without hardware changes. In the beginning, you always give yourself more slack. With more running time comes more safety. And higher power outputs."
