Piastri on a possible move to Red Bull? ‘Flattering to have those comments’

Oscar Piastri once again had a strong day in Belgium, as he once again finished in P2 in the sprint race after earning to start from the first row of the grid in the sprint shootout. Thanks to McLaren’s strategy call, the Australian also led the sprint race briefly at Spa.

Piastri finished in second place behind Max Verstappen, after he has already been linked to become the Dutchman’s potential teammate in the future. "It's flattering to have those comments. I'm very happy where I am. It's always nice to be talked about in those kind of ways. I think my season's been quite good. On the most part, I think there's definitely been some mistakes or moments I wish I could have had again," Piastri commented on the rumours.

"But with hindsight, it's very easy to say those kind of things. So yeah, I'm happy with where I'm at. Driving-wise, there's still a lot to improve, a lot to learn. I've got a very strong teammate to learn from, who's been a benchmark, it is a big help for me getting back up to speed. So yes, I'm happy where I am," the McLaren driver added.

Leading laps in Formula 1 and the second restart

Thanks to pitting on Lap 1, Piastri could take the lead of the Sprint Race. "You're always focusing on trying to just do the best laps you can. When you've got Max and his car behind you, it does put your nerves at ease, put it that way. I knew it was going to be difficult to hold him behind, of course. I probably wasn't expecting him to catch me literally at the top of Eau-Rouge off the safety car restart, such is our straight-line speed."

On the other hand, Piastri said that he expected Verstappen to overtake him at some point. "I was just focusing on trying to do the best job I could, knowing that it was probably going to be a when Max came past rather than an if. But, yes, I tried my best, and I think second was all we had."

The Australian also explained the second start of the day behind the safety car, the one he led out. "I've done quite a few safety car restarts before, so it's not nothing new. You just try and do the best job you can in tricky conditions with quite low tyre temps at that point. So, yes, I tried the best that I could. I think I went a bit wide at Turn 1, which didn't help things, but I don't think it really made much difference. So, no, it was nice to be able to control the safety car restart again, and hopefully there's a few more opportunities in the future."

Come on red bull make it happen. A week ago I would prefer Lando in the second red bull seat. Piastri I'd really growing on me.

Piastri looking like the right stuff as they say. Meanwhile, George Russell continues to struggle week after week. Come on George, get it together, it is starting to make me wonder.

I agree, i mean i am not a fan of George, but his '22 season made it look like he was able to be up there.
But it was mostly Lewis just having a horrible season.

If he was to go, there and the normal crushing of teammates occurred the usual sycophants would claim either Max was given a better car to hold Piastri back or he was not a great driver to begin with so of course he would get trampled on! It never ends.

Watching Lewis blow past Perez on the straights today it is now clear the Engineers have given MB the car to win with. What they do with it is another story. I would imagine Lewis will still claim that the car is not fast enough to win with even if he does pull off a win tomorrow or in a few races. My hopes are that Lando, Piastri get a win tomorrow and that Riccardo and Albon continue to out race their respective cars and both take the top 10 slots

Marko will probably be fed up of Perez by now. The contrast between the 2 RB19s couldn't have been more glaring. Perez's position in Red Bull definitely under threat

No Doubt but I do believe he is a top ten driver and maybe a top 8. The challenge is he is just not Max and I would love to see someone on the team that could challenge Max and maybe exceed him, but the reality is that there is probably nobody on the grid that can keep up with Max. And that also has to be on the teams mind as well. Seeing Lewis still struggle with a faster car than Perez makes the point even more sharp.

I doubt if there is any driver on the grid who currently is able to challenge Max to be honest. Gasly, Albon and Checo are all very good drivers, but have been obliterated by Verstappen. I would definitely would like to see the old foxes Alonso or Hamilton besides Verstappen. That would definitively result in fireworks! But we all know that unfortunately is never ever going to happen…

I would love to see Max and Lewis do a Match Race at the end of the year raise money for Lewis's charity using the two Williams cars. Max I am confident would be all over it but Lewis would decline. We would also get a great gauge of the actual potential of those cars.

If merc, AM, Ferrari, McMerc, would get their chit together and start challenging the RB19 then yeah, I believe Marko would be saying about Check like me 6yr old grandson says when he twists the throttle in his KTM... 'HE GONE!".

If another constructor cannot challenge the RB for the constructor championship then Checko may be safe through '24. Not sure how much money Checko's bringing in sponsorship backing but it may come into play.
