Recently, the FIA announced that from the 2023 Formula 1 season, political expressions will be banned. That decision met with criticism from the likes of Valtteri Bottas but was met with understanding from David Coulthard. Max Verstappen joins his fellow driver in calling the decision "unnecessary".
Whereas Verstappen normally stays aloof from political issues, he is speaking out about the FIA's decision. The two-time world champion may have little desire to make political statements himself, but he believes everyone should be able to say what they want.
"Some people are more outspoken than others. I’m normally not outspoken of that because first of all, it’s tough as a racing driver to be fully committed to that as well, in terms of going into everything and making sure that you know all the facts right," Verstappen said in conversation with Sky Sports. "But I don’t think it is necessary."
He continued: "In a way, you’re basically making sure people are not allowed to speak anymore which I think we should be allowed and of course, like I said before, some people will speak a bit more, some not. But it was probably a bit unnecessary."
Earlier, Valtteri Bottas also expressed criticism of the FIA's ban. The Alfa Romeo driver is also not so concerned with political matters, but, like Verstappen, thinks everyone should be able to speak out and argues that the governing body wants to determine what the drivers say.
Thank you for saying it was unnecessary Max. Hopefully your followers on here that are against it do the usual and agree with everything you say
His so-called fans only agree with the FIA because it's really about shutting Lewis up. That's all.
It's all about their anti-Lewis stance. If it was Max who was outspoken, they'd be defending his right to free speech.
Max is being more pragmatic about it, unlike most of his fans. Kinda says a lot for the fans eh? Their opinions are formed based on what they think of Lewis Hamilton.
Marko, Max and Bottas (two drivers who are the least outspoken on issues outside of F1) have all said they think it's wrong.
what do you mean by so-called fans?? your working for the quality tabloids or what???
'quality tabloids' sounds like an oxym0r0n. There are no quality tabloids.
So-called fans are those who aren't pure F1 fans. Such as those who like to spread hate/toxicity by posts or other actions. A lot of Max fans are guilty of this as has been evidenced in this very blog over the last 2 years at least.
So-called fans are those who think what happened in AD2021 was all good and above board. Those who know it was wrong but won't dare admit to it because it favoured their driver. Either that or they're simply ignorant of the rules or too stubborn to accept how they actually work (e.g. JEM).
Those who dare not admit that it was wrong simply because it favoured their driver. Those who simply want to provide a running list of the same old excuses time and time again, that didn't wash the first time around and they still don't.
So-called fan's are also those who support Max purely because of their negative feelings towards Lewis.
Make no mistake, they are out there.
These people are not proper F1 fans. They're in in for the rivalry and to talk crap about the other side every chance they get. Trolls basically.
This was never how F1 fanbases were. Social media and such have poisoned the well now that everyone has voice.
Hopefully that's enough of an explanation for you. I've left a couple of cans of worms there for people to pick at too, should they be so inclined. It will just highlight and further my point, if and when they do.
Well done. You should have been this direct on Piquet droppings.
hani, you are saying after max stated that everybody should be able to say what they want, that he had to limit this right for his possible father in law?? sounds stupid doesn't it??
Read carefully, my English is not that difficult. I am saying he should have exercised his right by being this direct, since he recognizes the fact that drivers shouldn't be sensored on issues such as the Piquet matter.
He went about the bush and tried to hide behind his thumb, it was so bad RBR had to PR his behind on social media.
I hope you don't use that line of talking to me again. "Stupid"
it's not that yours English is difficult. your just talking nonsense. stupid in my point of view. and 6 likes, you, I mean Lewis fans like you...
have I touched a nerve?? heard more often things about your intelligence?? at least Mercedes and Lewis fit you like a glove..
Oyi! Toni you are nothing man. I have read your incomplete silly comments shut the f . Ck up.
