Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard get into a conversation about Max Verstappen's exceptional class as a racing driver. Jordan dares to say he expects Verstappen to one day become the greatest of all time. His mother contributed to that as well.
Coulthard does not see how anyone can ever beat the Red Bull Racing driver on his own. Only with a stronger car is his competition capable of anything against the Dutchman. Sergio Pérez therefore faces an impossible task. In the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan thinks Pérez is at least doing pretty well. "‘Ricciardo was there, but there’s no way Daniel Ricciardo is doing, what Checo is doing. What Daniel has done, as how much we like the guy, but Checo was doing a magic job”"
Jordan believes that Verstappen does not get all his racing talent from father Jos Verstappen, but that he has also become very inspired by his mother, Sophie Kumpen. Jordan: "And Max, we have had enough diners with him, lunches and a few beers, to realise that, I think, he sees the performance of his mother, her speed and how she went about her business. He is naturally going to say he got his inspiration from both. She was a great talent in karting."
Jordan sums up: "When you have such a great talent in karting and then you have a father who is a Grand Prix driver and understands the pitfalls, you have naturally someone who is as fast as Max Verstappen. For me, I really do believe that in time he will turen out to be the greatest driver of all time, if he stays safe and healthy for a long time."
A team mate like Lewis _ that is comparing a racer with a pin-up person !
Max is the greatest because he has the the best car at the moment but because he didn't race alongside a teammate like Alonso or Hamilton I can't compare him with Senna or other drivers from the Hall of fame !
Ask Alonso. He will say Senna. And raced against both.
Alonso has stated that if Max maintains his present form and has good cars he could become the greatest ever. Right now he can be considered one of the greats and he is only 25 ! Watching this incredible driver who has the potential to become the Goat (not quite there yet) is a gift. Verstappen having his career legitimately compared to Senna's speaks volumes
Are you saying Alonso drove competitively against Senna when he was 13 years old? I know Alonso in 2021 said the one driver he wouldn't want to try to beat as a teammate was Max and I'm pretty sure Alonso actually rates himself as the greatest of all time. ?
Yes, Alonso competed as a 13 year old but under an assumed name. Seriously, my bad. I know he did not compete against him but he was a big fan and considered his greatness a greater than Michael's. He is also very complimentary about Max. Personally, I still think Senna is the best of the modern era with Max and Lewis very close seconds. And of course both Lewis and Max can change my opinion in the coming years.
https://www.lequipe.fr/Formule-1/Actualites/Eddie-jordan-hamilton-est-le-plus-grand-pilote-de-tous-les-temps/1202861 I wonder if jordan said that after he had a couple of beers with Hamilton's father !
"For me, I really do believe that in time he will turen out to be the greatest driver of all time, if he stays safe and healthy for a long time." So Jordan is saying Max isn't ,right now the greatest of all time, but he will be . I am interested to know whats the measure he is using and currently who is the greatest of all time that he needs to surpass. I like the conversation thou. Its intresting.
Maybe he will. Time will tell. Senna was, in my opinion, the greatest. Had he lived he would have won two or three more championships. Then again, maybe he would not and we would be questioning his talent. Such is the fickle nature of F1. Personally, I think there are several that belong in the top category and we can personalise who we think is best.
Define greatest of all time, I'll patiently wait. Unless you put Senna, Prost, Schumacher, and others in the same equipment then its nigh on impossible.
You will not only have to put them in the same equipment, you will have to put them in a timeline where they all peaked......its like you said, impossible.......But you can put them as the GOATs in their eras........
Impossible to compare drivers from different eras. I will always have Jim Clark and Ayrton Senna at the top of my list. But Max Verstappen is the best today.
He already is he just doesn't have a cabinet full of trophies to prove it to the world. If you look at his pace, consistency and racecraft these last 2+ years he's basically so perfect it's scary.
Frankly, Ik think you just slammed the nail on the head. A cabinet of trophies, statistics, records or whatever else tells the story of complete packages, including drivers AND cars. A great driver is read on the track. So is de greatest. And that's what I'm reading as of Monaco 2018. Calling it scary is legit.
True. If trophies in a cabinet define who is the goat, then I don't think Max will be there, because he's indicated that he probably won't stay in f1 that long! However, based on ability and sheer dominance, I do believe Max will be rated and remembered in the same way as Senna and Schumacher.
At the end of the year, he will be a 3 time champion like Senna who is regarded as one of the greatest of all times............ :) His legacy is created and will be intact............
