Hope for Verstappen: Chance to avoid penalty due to technicality

Max Verstappen is facing a grid penalty after the stewards decided to penalise him for ignoring a double yellow flag. However, there may be mitigating circumstances, Red Bull Racing's Senior Systems Engineer explained on Twitter.

Mitigating circumstances for Verstappen

The engineer shared an image showing a section of the regulations surrounding yellow flag situations and the following accompanying text: "Have some hope Max fans, we could get away with this on a technicality."

The regulations state that the marshalls are responsible for giving signals, but that in the evening this can be replaced by lights and reflective panels. Red Bull Racing can use this as an argument in an attempt to get Verstappen off the hook.

Onboard footage of the Dutchman showed that the signal did not appear on his dashboard or on the panel next to the track. A marshall did wave double yellow flags, but it could certainly be seen as mitigating circumstances.

As read, the light "MAY" replace the flags not definitely replace them.....

So Karen Horner has to break out the suck up kit after bad mouthing the stewards.

I think he'll be getting a rollicking grom RB management for using the term 'get away with'. What an idiot.

Khabs 21 November 2021 at 11:40+ 196

Max won't get any penalty between now and the end of the season, the Stewards will try by all means to spare him any penalty since he is challenging Lewis for the title! If there's any one who will get a penalty for anything that's Lewis!

Bottas was in front of him, much closer to Gasly, and he didn't jump off the throttle, and why are we not hearing about that? It wasn't a classic tyre blowout either, Gasly lost half his front wing which sliced the tyre and ended up all over the track. It then took the stewards 20s to react, which is actually fine as they aren't omnipresent robots like half this gallery..

Why are all the ham worshipers on here so paranoid and in turmoil over Max?
Ok, in a slower car all year he is somehow still 14 pts ahead but after F1 2021 died in Brazil, the fraud has another WT laid on a platter for him like the previous 7.
Its all over red rover.

Haita Valentin 21 November 2021 at 09:17+ 5245

We are no paranoid, you stupid idiot. But the rules are for everyone and in the last 2 races, Max broke the rules in 3 times and he's got just one fine..

Seagull8 21 November 2021 at 08:32+ 304

Read the rules, double waved yellow flags mean slow down and any trackside lights are only suplementary. Vercrashen did not slow down to loose his fastest lap. So stewards should scrub that lap and start from pit lane as the penalty. (Just imagine what Marko and Horner will do.)

Haita Valentin 21 November 2021 at 08:32+ 5245

RBR 's members has an excuse for every infrigement of the rules that it's been made by their golden boy...In Brasil it was ,, Hard racing'' now it's sometihing related to electronics :)))

I probably wouldn't have taken this to twitter if i were him. It can go either way. It was a mistake made by race control, by not signalling as they should, but Max also went by that marshall who was waving the flag. Interpretation will be decisive.

Bradley Trichardt 21 November 2021 at 07:21+ 133

Steward's are Max's personal support system ,they create a escape hatchet to the rules for Max .Clear and obvious Max saw double yellow .Still couldn't beat Lewis's to pole .What he want to beat Lewis to the First corner ,and change his direction by weaving from left to right if Lewis wants to pass Him .I'll personally give Max 5 place grid penalty and see if he is as great as Lewis too Win from there .

Simpleh Lovely 21 November 2021 at 06:35+ 15729

FIA has made the error here by not issuing the yellow flag electronically. Very difficult to see those flags at night.

Michael1980 21 November 2021 at 06:17+ 47

Yeah...just shunt anyone, particularly Lewis, at any corner and you'll be remembered as the greatest hit and win driver..,

Ingenieur 21 November 2021 at 05:02+ 204

Remember Austria 2020?
Ham was cleared of a Yellow Flag infraction. RB complained and he got a 3 spot penalty. No lights on his dash.

5 for Max
3 for Bottas and Sainz
If this does not happen, especially after last week, you know the fix is in.

My concern is Max intentionally taking Ham out: he did at Monza and tried last week.

It doesn’t matter the marshals waving flags are always given priority over light boards. This is because the light boards are controlled by a man (or muppet in Masi’s case) in an office watching a camera.
The marshals however are there viewing from a marshal post and can see the incident even before the Race director can see it on his cameras.
Due to this it’s a slam dunk penalty especially as Verstappen set his fastest time on the lap the double waved yellows were on show.

The rules are clear, when you see a double yellow.flag ,you slow because your lap time will be deleted.
The drivers would be told in advance if the double yellow will be replaced by lights at night.
If they told the drivers that the lights would be used then I rightly so, no penalties should apply.

It was the clear rules that caught out and confirmed Mercedes as cheats.
BTW, read this article again but slower so you grasp it.

VeganWarrior 21 November 2021 at 02:53+ 52581

Well we both know nothing will come of it , cause the Stewards and the FIA are giving max biase rulings the entire season.

Stevesyd 21 November 2021 at 03:51+ 36119

So you are totally in agreement that a 10 sec penalty is all that is required should hamilton be on the receiving end of a Silverton incident given at the time you were adamant there was nothing in it?
At least we agree on that.

I trust the Stewards to make a fair assessment, thats the way F1 works ,whether i or you like it or not .

Bruce Jay 21 November 2021 at 03:36+ 447

Having a part broken on your car doesn't make you cheats. Maybe being allowed to repair it without penalty does but then that would only apply to Red Bull.

Martijn 21 November 2021 at 10:45+ 1388

You must slow down. Because it would still lead to improved lap times a recent addition is that lap times will be deleted as well.

Meint Veldman 21 November 2021 at 01:09+ 293

Come on..

Nor Verstappen, nor Bottas or Sainz ( who had the same problem) is going to on purpose ignore a double yellow.
There was zero advantage to be gotten from doing so in this situation while the risk of punishment is very real.

Clearly the system did not work as it should have, as seen by all of us and confirmed by FIA.

FlatOut 21 November 2021 at 01:02+ 23225

Of course he'll get away with it and of course there are 'mitigating circumstances'. Horner could sell ice to an eskimo.
FIA won't do a thing. You'll see.

Taylor R Edline 21 November 2021 at 11:45+ 60

Inuit. Eskimo is not an acceptable term.

User Avatar
FlatOut 21 November 2021 at 13:11+ 23225

It's acceptable to me. Also I'm well aware what the term is. If I wrote Inuit here, the simple minded trolls wouldn't have a clue what it was.
The saying is "could sell ice to an Eskimo". It's an old term so I stuck to it.
Deal with it.

Bill Heijnen 22 November 2021 at 24:07+ 374

so you do know beforehand there are simple-minded people on this blog? I think you are the one who is simple-minded

Ignore him. It's pointless trying to argue with a Narcissist, and even worse, a 'woke' one.

Psycd 22 November 2021 at 04:25+ 355

And yes I'm calling Flat-out a Narcissistic fck

Jeffry Damien 21 November 2021 at 24:54+ 401

Yeah..steward must bow to max and let him get away with it?

QPhysics137 21 November 2021 at 01:02+ 217

Get away with what? Driving when the track-side lights were green and the light on his steering wheel was green?

There's a reason the sporting regulations say lights replace or supplement flags when the racing isn't taking place during the day.

Jeffry Damien 21 November 2021 at 01:09+ 401

Watch it again dude..its on a double yellow and max is a god to steward. So they should forget who they dealing with hahaha

You could hear on the commentators there were something fcked up with the yellow flag warnings, and it could be why Max didn't know about it. Hopefully it will not result in a penalty.
Go get e'm Redbull! ?? ?? ??

QPhysics137 21 November 2021 at 24:21+ 217

The track-side lights were green.
The commentators were remarking about how surprised they were that the warning system wasn't showing a yellow sector.

F1 Jim 21 November 2021 at 24:19+ 2458

No penalty likely. FIA wants Max to win.

F1F1 21 November 2021 at 24:13+ 23

Max saw a gap on the flag.
