Pierre Gasly's future is in the hands of the FIA. Red Bull Racing will allow the French driver to leave for Alpine if Colton Herta is granted dispensation for the super license by the governing body. If not, Gasly will be held to his contract and remain active for AlphaTauri in 2023. There are no real alternatives to Herta, according to Christian Horner.
Gasly himself respects his contract, but it is no secret that the 26-year-old would much rather move to Alpine. There he would be driving for a factory team in his own country and so the opportunities there are greater for him. A return to Red Bull Racing has already been ruled out by Helmut Marko, so there is little reason for Gasly to add another season at AlphaTauri. Sergio Perez is also contracted to Red Bull for 2024.
Red Bull is grateful to Gasly for the past few years and is therefore willing to consider a departure. Herta is the intended successor. The American IndyCar driver is a great talent, but compared to Formula 2 and Formula 3, in the American racing class you can only earn a few points for the FIA super license. Without such a licence, you are not allowed to drive in the pinnacle of motorsport, but there are some opportunities to make exceptions.
That is what Red Bull will have to wait for now. Horner says in conversation with Autosport.com Horner says that he would rather get clarity on this issue today than tomorrow, but it could still take some time. When asked if there would be an alternative if Herta wasn't granted a dispensation, the Red Bull Racing team boss replied, "I think Pierre is doing a good job within AlphaTauri. So I don't think there will be a desire to change if there wasn't an interesting option available.”
All arrows are therefore reportedly aimed at bringing Herta in. The 22-year old driver is still under contract with Andretti, but he can get out of that contract if he can find a permanent job in Formula 1.
Everyone assumes PG will simply accommodate the machinations of the powers that be, and gracefully step aside. PG, time for you to up your game, keep a smile on your face, while your agent negotiates the price of your cooperation with both AT (exit bonus) and Alpine (signing bonus). Monza is your lucky track!
Don't see checo going till 2024, not if he can't get closer to Verstappen
you don't need to be close to max if you're 2nd in the championship
see Bottas
Red Bull want him to get his super license. So does Alpha. So does Alpine. And most of the other teams are probably in support as well to have an American in the fold as the number of races increases in the USA. Somehow I think this will happen quickly.
Liberty also wants an american driver. So everyone wins. I hope they grant the exception as Herta is more experienced than Mazepin who got the super license as well
Yes, for these reasons i would be shocked if it never happened.
There was an article a few days ago saying that AT might be up for sale as Dietrich Mateschitz is thinking of retiring, and if it really is, the first team/person who will grab it is Andretti.
This then make sense why AT is so keen to have Herta in the car, so Andretti will have the driver they want already in the team when they were to buy it.
This would also make AT more attractive and will be worth a ‘premium’ to be able to ask a larger $$ Sum from Andretti to buy it.
All makes sense and the puzzle is beginning to come together and take shape.
I agree, the pieces seem to be falling into place nicely and most of F1 wants Herta in the car. I have followed his career and he is certainly a talent. Still think Drugovich would have a better first season knowing the F2 cars, and the tracks, but Herta will have lots of simulator work and they get better each year. Any guesses for an announcement? I think we will learn at Monza.
